Description:Gene Analogous Finder
Abstract:The Gene Analogous Finder is a tool to find functionally analogous gene products by comparing gene products according to their gene ontology, GO, description and not to their sequence. The tool demonstrated that GO has the potential to be used not only for analysis of biological data but also directly for comparative researches like the search for functional analogues implemented in Gene Analogue Finder. Compared with other similar tools, in particular with the GO-family tool, we find that Gene Analogue Finder provides different and complementary information. The run of Gene Analogue Finder over the GRID showed to be highly effective: the functional analogy search was divided in a large number of jobs and distributed over the EGEE infrastructure to reduce the processing time from about 1,25 years on a single machine to about 1 day occupying up to 950 different worker nodes. The prototype framework used by Gene Analogue Finder for the remote installation of the data and of the Perl Library, the application monitoring and the submitting mechanism performed by JST showed to be highly reliable and general enough to be applied in other bioinformatics applications as well as in other research fields.
