Name:LAWEF-GRID
Description:Limited Area Weather and Environmental Forecasting on a Grid Platform
Abstract:This application is targeting to produce early warnings related with hazardous weather events. Such real time operations are approached using the MPI based Skiron/Eta weather forecasting system for short time periods (18 hours forecasting horizon). Using the concept of “nowcasting”, the system is daily integrated on a very high resolution domain (~5 km) covering the wider area of Eastern Mediterranean. The normal operation of the computational model runs in a deterministic fashion under Grid environment. Emergency condition is assumed if a hazardous weather event is detected in the computational domain from the previous operational cycle. In this case, the system switches to a “stochastic” mode instead of the normal deterministic execution. The stochastic mode is consisting of ensemble model realizations producing a “cloud” of forecasts rather than a certain one. In this case, a sudden increase of computational demands emerges (1-2 orders of magnitude higher) that requires near real-time allocation of several Grid resources. The meteorological application architecture consists of the MPI based Skiron/Eta weather forecasting system and it is aiming to predict and analyze hazardous weather events.
