Name:RAMS
Description:Modelling In Meteorological and Climate Applications
Abstract:In the present work, the advantages of using the Grid services for meteorological applications will be presented. The main use of Grid will be for development of the RAMS modeling system. RAMS model has been widely implemented in many meteorological applications for weather prediction. In the present time, RAMS is evaluated for predictions of Saharan dust transport in Greece and climatic changes that will occur due to the dust transport. The usage of Grid is necessary for evaluating RAMS as a large number of runs are needed during a model development to ensure the validity of the model outputs, but it is not useful for emergency response for everyday weather prediction. RAMS is a three-dimensional prognostic model with a high potential spatial resolution (less than 1km); thus, advanced computational means are required for RAMS applications. Furthermore, the existing CPU units are used for the operational use (daily weather forecasting), which increases the necessity for additional computational resources. The use of Grid services will provide the necessary computational means in order to facilitate and accelerate the model development attempts.
